Barrel Uses: Lawn & Garden There is no need to drill drainage holes in the bottom of these planters as you do with “whiskey barrel” planters. Our slack barrels allow for slow even drainage through the sides and bottom. General rules in selecting the right size container for your plants are that the container should be about twice the size of the root ball of the plants. Shallow barrel planters measuring 5 and 9 inches high are suitable for shallow rooted plants like color annuals; 11 and 13 inch high planters are good for standard size planting materials and if you are planning to put a shrub or a small tree in a tub, you need to use the larger 17 inch high barrel planter. Use different heights for planting sets.
